What is MELT Truck Driver Training?

Since 2019, new drivers must complete the Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) course before applying for either a Class 1 license.

Our training program includes:

  • All government-mandated training hours in-class, in-yard, and in-vehicle
  • A standardized curriculum taught at all licensed Alberta driving schools
  • The essential knowledge for Class 1 truck driver road tests in Alberta


Who is required to complete the MELT program?

  • All new Class 1 commercial drivers in Alberta
  • Out-of-province drivers holding a Class 1 license for less than 12 months
  • School bus drivers


Registration requirements for the MELT program

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have any non-probationary driver's license in Alberta. *
    • NOTE: If your current license is part of the Graduated Driver Licensing Program, you are not yet eligible for a Class 1 license
  • Have an approved Alberta driver's medical examination report completed by a physician
